Islamabad Talks Collapse: No Breakthrough in 21-Hour US-Iran Negotiations

The live ink desk. High-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran held in Islamabad ended without any agreement after nearly 21 hours of continuous negotiations, highlighting deep divisions on key strategic issues. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who led the American delegation, departed for Washington early Sunday following the inconclusive discussions.

According to media reports, Vance left Pakistan at approximately 7:09 AM local time aboard Air Force Two. Addressing a press conference before departure, he confirmed that despite “serious and sustained engagement,” the two sides failed to reach common ground.

Key Sticking Points

The مذاکرات primarily revolved around several critical issues:

  • Iran’s nuclear program
  • Security of the Strait of Hormuz
  • Lifting of U.S. sanctions
  • War reparations and a complete cessation of hostilities

The United States insisted on a clear, verifiable commitment from Iran to neither develop nuclear weapons nor pursue capabilities that could enable rapid weaponization. However, the Iranian delegation declined to accept these conditions, leading to a deadlock.

“More Consequential for Iran”

Vice President Vance indicated that the absence of an agreement could have more serious implications for Iran than for the U.S. He emphasized that Washington remains firm on its national security priorities and would not dilute its stance in future negotiations.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role Praised

Vance commended Pakistan’s efforts as a mediator, appreciating Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir for facilitating dialogue. He described Pakistan as a “constructive host” that made genuine attempts to bridge differences between the two sides.

Exchange of Proposals, No Outcome

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that the talks involved multiple rounds of document exchanges and proposals, covering a wide spectrum of contentious issues. Despite the prolonged engagement, no formal agreement could be finalized.

Strategic Context

The Islamabad talks were held more than a month after the launch of the U.S. ‘Operation Epic Fury’, amid heightened tensions in the region. Analysts warn that the failure of these negotiations could further destabilize the Middle East and impact global energy markets.
