“Retaliation Is Our Right”: Pezeshkian Signals Hardline Shift in Iran’s Post-Khamenei Era

The live ink desk. In his first address to the nation following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a firm and uncompromising message, asserting that holding those responsible to account is Iran’s “legitimate right.” He described the incident as a direct act of hostility against the country and warned of a decisive response.

Pezeshkian stated that Iran’s armed forces have been instructed to take necessary measures to safeguard national security and that strategic operations would continue in line with the country’s defence doctrine. Referring to Khamenei as a “martyr,” he affirmed that Iran would remain committed to the path and principles laid down by its late leader.

The president also confirmed the formation of a new leadership council tasked with overseeing governance during the transitional period. According to him, the council will ensure administrative continuity and coordinate key national decisions. He urged citizens to maintain unity and resilience amid escalating regional tensions.

Meanwhile, Iran announced fresh military actions targeting U.S. bases in the Gulf region and certain locations in Iraqi Kurdistan. Head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, said that those responsible for the attack would receive an “unforgettable lesson.”

Notably, Pezeshkian was elected in 2024 as a reformist candidate. During his debut speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024, he had emphasized national unity, constructive global engagement, and reiterated that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons. He had also expressed readiness to reduce tensions with Western nations.

However, in his latest national address, the tone appeared significantly more defensive and retaliatory. Amid mounting military tensions and leadership changes, Iran has signalled that it will not refrain from assertive action in matters concerning its sovereignty and security.
