Lodge Zero FIR from mobile, Summons will be sent online

The live ink desk. Three new laws have been implemented in India from today. The British era IPC 1860 will now be known as the Indian Judicial Code (BNS). Similarly, the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 has been replaced by the Indian Civil Protection Code 2023. In the same sequence, the Indian Evidence Act 2023 has been implemented in place of the Indian Evidence Act 1972.

Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita

This law will replace the Indian Penal Code. It allows people to file FIRs regardless of jurisdiction and mandates judgments within 45 days of trial completion.

Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita

This law will replace the Code of Criminal Procedure. It allows for online registration of complaints and mandates videography of crime scenes.

Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam

This law will replace the Indian Evidence Act. It allows for electronic service of summons and mandates videography of crime scenes.

The new criminal laws in India include the following key provisions

  • Zero FIR: Any person can file a FIR at any police station, regardless of jurisdiction.
  • Online registration of complaints: People can register police complaints online.
  • Electronic serving of summons: Summonses can be served electronically, making the legal process faster.
  • Videography of crime scenes: Crime scenes must be video graphed for all serious crimes.
  • Faster judgments: Judgments must be made within 45 days of completion of trial.
  • Faster charges: Charges must be framed within 60 days of first hearing.
  • New crimes: New crimes like gang rape, mob killing, false promise of marriage has been added.
  • Harsher penalties: The imprisonment sentence has been increased for 33 crimes, and the amount of fine has been increased in 83 crimes.
  • Community service: Penalty of community service has been introduced in six crimes.
